Google Fit is an exercise tracking app that integrates with your phone sensors and WearOS devices. It used to be a data aggregator for Android, but that feature is now performed by Health Connect.

Note: Google Fit has discontinued direct access to its data and is set to sunset on January 1, 2026. If you have paired Google Fit before November 24, 2025, you will need to do so again with the steps below.

How to Connect

Google Fit shares its data using Health Connect, which is a multi-step process. Make sure to follow this guide carefully:

1. Tap Activity Sources in the game menu from the lobby or gameboard

2. Tap Pair a New Source

3. On the next screen choose I use an app on my phone, then select Google Fit in the list of apps and tap Select this App

4. Now you’ll need to grant access to Health Connect. Tap Grant Access, then allow all the permissions on the pop-up that appears (scroll down to see them)

5. Google Fit needs to be set up to sync its data to Health Connect in order for your steps to sync. Follow Google’s guide to do this, then return to the app and tap I Connected to Health Connect

6. A connection test will run to ensure data is flowing between Google Fit and your banks. If there are any issues you’ll be notified, otherwise you’re ready to go!

How to Log Exercise

Google Fit allows you to log exercise in two ways.

Add Activity
If you want to track exercise you’ve already done, follow these steps:

1. Tap the Plus Icon in the bottom-left corner of the Google Fit app, then tap Add activity

2. Enter the details of your workout on the next screen, then tap Save

3. Your exercise is now logged and will shortly appear in your power bank when you return to the A Step Ahead app

Track Exercise
If you want to track exercise while you’re doing it, follow these steps:

1. Tap the Plus Icon in the bottom-left corner of the Google Fit app, then choose Track Workout

2. When you’re ready to start exercising, tap Start [workout name]

3. After you’ve finished your exercise, first tap the pause button at the bottom of the screen, then tap the stop button

4. Your exercise is now logged and will shortly appear in your power bank when you return to the A Step Ahead app. If your exercise also included movement, you will also earn steps

Troubleshooting

My steps or exercise aren’t being added to my banks
There are two major causes of syncing issues for Google Fit:

  1. A Step Ahead doesn’t have the correct permissions to access data from Health Connect
  2. Google Fit is not set to sync its data with Health Connect

To fix issue 1, check the App Permissions for A Step Ahead in your Android settings and make sure all requested Health Connect permissions are set to Allow.

To fix issue 2, follow this guide from Google.

How do I manually enter steps?
Adding steps to Google Fit manually is a very similar process to logging exercise. Follow the Add Activity guide above and make sure you add your steps in the steps field before tapping Save.

Note: Manually added steps may be limited or disabled during the setup process by the organizer of your mission.

How do I get power?
Google Fit will automatically track exercise that it detects (if your phone or smartwatch is connected). If you want to track additional exercise, follow the How to Log Exercise guide above.
