The A Step Ahead app can be connected directly to your phone’s pedometer, which allows you to track your steps without a third-party app. Because it uses the pedometer data directly, manual entry is not supported and only steps taken while your phone is on you are counted.
When you pair A Step Ahead you also get access to the Exercise Timer, which is a way to log workouts inside the app to earn power.
How to Connect
A Step Ahead is the simplest activity source to connect, as it only requires access to your pedometer data. To add it to your sources:
1. Tap Activity Sources in the menu from the lobby or gameboard
2. Tap Pair a New Source
3. On the next screen choose “I use an app on my phone”, then select A Step Ahead in the list of apps and tap Select this App
4.Tap Grant Access and allow all permissions in the pop-up that appears
5. A connection test will run to ensure data is flowing between your pedometer and your step bank. If there are any issues you’ll be notified, otherwise you’re ready to go!
How to Log Exercise
Your pedometer will only track steps, so when using A Step Ahead as your activity source you also have access to the Exercise Timer. To add a workout and earn power:
1. On the gameboard tap the Start Exercise button below your banks
2. Choose the duration of your workout, then tap Start to begin the timer
3. The timer is now active, and you can choose to pause the timer or stop it early. To return to this screen from the gameboard, tap the timer under your banks
4. When the timer is finished, you’ll receive a push notification. Tap the notification or Complete Exercise button on the gameboard to view the completed timer
5. To finish your exercise and earn power, tap the Record Exercise button. This will log your exercise and add power to your bank
Troubleshooting
My steps aren’t being added to my bank
Make sure you carry your phone with you as you move, because A Step Ahead reads from your pedometer it will only count steps the phone detects.
Check your pedometer’s data using your phone’s primary health app to make sure they are being detected properly. On iOS that is the Health app, and on Android you can use Google Fit.
How do I manually add steps?
The A Step Ahead activity source does not support manually entered steps. This helps us ensure our challenges are fair, so please bring your phone on your walks if you use this source.
How do I get power?
Your pedometer will only detect steps, so in order to get power you will need to use the Exercise Timer. See the “How to Log Exercise” guide above.
